7 Best Massage Guns In Australia 2024

massage guns from Australia in gym

With 2024 right around the corner we thought we'd jump in and review the best massage guns for the coming year. The industry has changed a lot since we first wrote our article three years ago and the value you can get for your money these days is insane. However there are a few issues which still remain in the industry. There are so many shapes, sizes and options available, sorting through the best massage gun for you can still be very time consuming and frankly overwhelming. Not to mention half the brands you look at aren’t based in Australia meaning that you could be waiting months or weeks for it to arrive only to find out that you don’t like it and need to ship the product back to wherever it came from.  Fortunately, to save you the time and effort, we have composed this article to help break down the top 7 best massage guns in Australia for 2024.

At the time of writing our initial article there were merely a handful of options to choose from with the Kmart massage gun being the only offering by a noteworthy Australian retailer. With the recent release of the Homedics massage gun, retailers such as The Good Guys, Harvey Norman, Bing Lee, and Target all have massage guns available. Even Aldi have released a massage gun as part of their special buys and Rebel sport have also produced their own massage gun with Celsius. In Australia, we now have access to recovery equipment like never before and it’s a refreshing change.

There are also many online retailers, some who have been selling for years and others who are new to the industry. Companies like Therabody who sell the Theragun, The Good Gun, Hydragun, and mussage are making serious waves.  The online retailers offer a far greater breadth of option with each company having their own unique quirks and product offerings which give the customer a greater choice than ever. The only setback with the online retailers might be that you cannot try before you buy but with most companies providing a 30 day money back guarantee, this risk is somewhat mitigated.

We would like to fully disclose that we do sell our own massage gun. To save you the suspense, we do plan on putting ours at the top as we are strong believers in what we offer. We wrote this article as we believe we are the best informed to write it. We sample products from every Australian massage gun retailer and have extensive knowledge in a niche market. Each retailer has done an awesome job of finding a unique product offering that makes them stand out in their own way. If you would like to disregard our review of our own massage gun, then hopefully you can use this article to make an informed decision to purchase from one of the other offerings in the market.

What to look for in a massage gun?

There is so much to sift through when looking for a massage gun. For a customer to know what defines a good massage gun, you must first ask what you use it for. Is it simply used for relaxation and a general muscle tightness? Do you use it pre- and post-exercise for improved performance and recovery? Or are you a pro athlete who needs it to push the boundaries of what’s humanly possible? These questions are very important, especially as the price point can range anywhere from $89 - $900. What you get at each price point is also not entirely linear. There are plenty of models which offer the same output as another and there could be hundreds of dollars in difference.

The first and most important point is battery life. To be fair, most massage guns have a good battery life. Industry standard usually sits around 3 working hours and considering that you will probably use it for no more than 5 minutes at a time, this is more than enough. Just have a quick check of the specs around this before purchasing.

Another area to consider is noise output. A lot of massage guns on the market are quite loud which can be quite frustrating depending on where you use it. If you’re planning on only using at the gym this is probably less important but if you’re using it in a household or quiet area it can be quite annoying to have a massage gun blaring out noise. Industry standard for decibel output is around 55-60db.

The internals are a very important area to consider when purchasing. It can be the difference between a deep impact and one which barely gets into the muscle at all. From what we have seen there are big variances in the output that many massage guns offer. The problem is that unless it’s a company like Theragun, it's hard to obtain reliable information. To lift the lid a little, it’s best to ask three main questions as you’ll generally find the most consistent results here. Does it have a brushless motor? A brushless motor will generally last longer and offer less noise output. What are the revolutions per minute? (how many times the massage head goes in and out per minute). What is the amplitude? (how deep the product goes). Whilst the wattage is certainly important, the inconsistency reported between each brand means that using this as a guide to what’s the most powerful is near impossible. It’s best to look at the product in action through videos or reviews and make a judgement call based on all the information available to you.

We have not tried this product out yet as it hasn’t been released, but from all the information we have available to us, it could well be the best value massage gun available on the market. Aldi have planned to release their new version of the massage gun for just $89 which is definitely the cheapest we have ever seen. It includes an LED luminated handle, Idle stoppage, 5 massage heads and a 3 year warranty which is huge considering that many customers may be worried with the reliability. 6. The Good Gun

The Good Gun

Besides a hilarious brand story (trust me, you want to follow their Instagram) The Good Gun have produced an excellent new massage gun for release. It solves the one big problem that most massage guns have and that is being able to reach your back. They have added a handle which allows you to reach most areas meaning that you don’t need your partner or friend to come along and assist on those hard-to-reach spots around your back. This is really groundbreaking for the industry and seems to have been met with lots of good customer response. The price point for what you get is also good with the RRP set at $370 which has a potential to be lower through discounts. The only downside is a relatively low power output according to the specs. When we tried it for ourselves, it didn’t seem too bad but we have felt stronger from other brands.

Pros

  • Back reaching handle
  • 6 Massage heads
  • Rotating massage head
  • Comes with a carry case
  • 5 hour battery life on lowest speed setting
  • 1 year warranty
  • Light weight – only 1kg

Cons

  • Lower power than industry standard with an 18W motor and only 2500 RPM
  • No mobile integration
  • Only 4 speed levels
  • Bulky design making it hard to transport

7. Hypervolt Go 2

Hypervolt Go 2

Honestly the Hypervolt range is quite overpriced for what you can get a lesser known brands. We couldn't conduct a complete review without at least throwing in their most affordable option. The Hypervolt Go 2 is compact and lightweight featuring a 40W motor which means there is decent power in such a small unit. Battery life is also strong at three hours and the design looks incredible. Where it falls back however is just on the basics. It only comes with two massage heads and three speed levels. This makes it quite hard to tailor the power and get into every muscle group. It still makes our list at number seven and comes from an excellent brand so you know it will stand the test of time.

Pros

  • Light weight
  • Cool look and feel
  • 3 hours battery life
  • Brushless 40W motor
  • Priced at $229

Cons

  • Only two massage heads
  • No 360 degree handle
  • No mobile integration

Can massage guns help you lose weight?

Massage guns do not directly help you to lose weight. They do help with reducing delayed onset muscle soreness, improving flexibility, and increasing blood flow. This means that you can spend more time focussing on your weight loss goals instead of delaying them through extended recovery times.

    Are massage guns worth it?

Massage guns are worth purchasing if you do physical activity a few times a week or if you experience general muscle pain. They are an excellent way to speed up your recovery whilst also helping you to perform at your peak. The bigger question is likely which massage gun is right for you. This often depends on your budget, how often you train and what you plan on using it for.

Can massage guns help with back pain?

Generally, massage guns are great for reducing pain. As backs are such a sensitive area, its always worthwhile to consult your doctor before pursuing massage gun therapy for back pain. Anecdotal evidence suggests that massage guns can help with back pain however this hasn’t been researched in great detail as of yet.
